Weird and Loving it! My top 5 Weird Al Parodys of All Time

Anyone who knows me knows I love Weird Al Yankovic…. The way that he can take a song and change the words so that it is funny or makes a point is nothing less than genius. I have already done a retro review of his movie UHF (you can read it here http://justadashofgeek.com/uhf-parody/, so I decided today that I would do my top 5 Weird Al Parody songs (I decided to keep it just parody songs, I will do my top 5 originals later). Why, because I can, and because I needed a laugh, so I thought some of you might need a laugh also.

#5 The Saga Begins

Ok so this is Star Wars and Weird Al, so you pretty much know it’s a win in my book. It is a parody of “American Pie” by Don McLean. This song was on Weird Al’s Album The Saga Begins (2000)

#4 Smells like Nirvana

I love this song because it pokes fun at the fact that you can’t understand the lyrics in “Smells like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. I was never able to completely get all the lyrics and at the time I didn’t have a computer to look it up on….mainly because computers were rare at that point. I probably could have asked any of my friends at the time – but I didn’t want to look stupid. This song has appeared on Weird Al’s albums Off the Deep End (1992), Permanent Record: Al in the Box (1994), Greatest Hits Volume II (1994) and The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic (2009)

#3 Amish Paradise

Ahhhhh Amish Paradise – if this one sounds familiar it is a parody of a song used in the Movie Dangerous Minds called “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio. This song is on Weird Al’s albums Bad Hair Day (1996) and The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic (2009)

#2 Like a Surgeon

I love the way he completely changed the words and the meaning of the song and still manages to poke fun at Madonna. This of course is a parody of “Like a Virgin” by Madonna. And can be found on Weird Al’s albums Dare to Be Stupid (1985), “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Greatest Hits (1988), Permanent Record: Al in the Box (1994),and The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic (2009)

#1 White and Nerdy

This is my all time favorite, and that is pretty much because I am white and nerdy. This is a Parody of “Ridin’” by Chamillionaire. White and Nerdy can be found on Weird Al’s albums Straight Outta Lynwood (2006) and The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic (2009).

All data for Albums and parody titles obtained from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_by_%22Weird_Al%22_Yankovic)

This list is my top 5….it was a tough decision. I had to leave out a lot of really great ones.I hope you enjoyed my to 5 list of Weird Al Parody songs – What are your top 5? Are any of mine a hit or miss with yours?
