Shutter Bugs Taking Pictures – Geeking (with kids)

The Geekling likes to play games on the iPod Touch (see an article about his favorites here: Websites and apps for kids ). Sometimes, like any day that ends in “Y”, he likes to switch over from playing  games and take random pictures. If there is one thing he likes more than games is taking pictures. He has taken pictures of anything from toes to the carpet. Most are blurry, but every once in a while the picture comes out…interesting.

So I figured that I would show you all what life looks like from the view-point of a 3-year-old taking pictures. *The pictures are fuzzy because they are coming from an iPod*

So hand your child an iPod or digital camera and experience what they see. Have them take pictures every couple of months – and save them. Then when they get older you can put them in a portfolio so they can see how they progressed, just like you would their art work.

With older kids you can even give them a project or “photo shoot” or a camera scavenger hunt is always fun. A camera scavenger hunt can be small-scale, such as giving them a list on a rainy day of things to take a picture of around the house (eg. a yellow ball on the bed next to a flower) or you can make it more elaborate (eg. must take a picture of a yellow bus near a grocery store) As always of course take the level and age of your child into consideration. At 3 my son has a hard time aiming the camera at things and taking a picture – so the scavenger hunt would be above his level at this point.

Just have fun with it…. it is a great project for young ones, that could help develop a love of photography.

Does your geekling ever take pictures and what is their favorite things to capture, if they do?

I always love looking at photos the little ones take. It’s always fun to see the world through their eyes. I agree, letting them play with the camera at an early age will foster a love for photography! Last year I handed my kids the camera and told them to snap a few shots of what they were “Thankful” for and then shared them on Thanksgiving.

It was interesting to see what your son found fascinating enough to snap photos of! Thanks for sharing his pictures :)

My daughter has her own camera, and occasionally I let her use my iPhone while we are out. I love her perspective on the world. It definitely takes me back to when I was 9 years old, and got my first camera for Easter. I love that first roll in the photo album from my own childhood view.

This is such a cute idea! And the perfect use for an old iPhone or digital camera instead of letting it gather dust in a drawer somewhere.
