Steel Magnolias is one of the biggest chick flicks of all time. The story is based around a female group of friends in a small Louisiana town. The story shows a few years of the friends lives, the good and the bad, the ups and the downs. I don’t want to give away the plot as it might ruin the story.

I remember watching this movie when I was much younger, but all I remembered from it was Dolly Parton’s hair and the Armadillo grooms cake….the image of that cake always stuck with me. Watching it again as an adult, it made me jealous. Well that is an odd thing to say isn’t it? I am jealous because it is hard to make friends now-a-days, let alone friends that are with you through thick and thin. My two best girl friends live way out-of-state and the girl friends that are left live in my home town which is about 40 minutes south of me which means we don’t get together very often. This movie made me want to make everyone get together.

One thing I noticed about this movie is that it skips ahead in time, but you always know how far by what holiday decorations are out. The movie opens on a wedding and they show Easter Eggs, so you know it is Easter…. The movie ends very appropriately on Easter a few years in the future. When you are watching, pay attention to the symbolic connection of the holidays and seasons to life…you will see a whole symbolic life cycle underlying the story of these women.

This movie made me cry – hard. It made me laugh – harder. It appeals to the girly side of any woman out there. I loved all the characters in this film, they were just salt of the earth type of characters, you know the ones that you can relate with and see getting a drink with. I would suggest this film to any one wanting a down home southern chick flick…. I mean it has the beautiful Dolly Parton – how can you go wrong? But I will warn, this is not a movie I would sit hubby down to watch, he would be bored out of his mind - so depending on the guy, this may not be action enough…it is very story driven.

Also, just so everyone knows, I guess they are doing a remake of this movie. Queen Latifa will be playing M’Lynn. It doesn’t say when it will be coming out, but IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2328749/) says it will be a TV movie. I do love Queen Latifah…..but the original Steel Magnolias has a special place in my heart…. None the less I am excited to watch the remake.
